Hi, I hope someone out there has had this problem and knows how to do this, I want a sunk-in-living room in my house. Does any one know how to do this?
I tried and my sims can’t go down the steps. Help Please?November 12, 2014 at 6:27 am #5153CatherineTCJDParticipantRe: Sunk In Living Room?
Hi Chi! You made it upstairs to your Sims!!! I hope this means you’re feeling a bit better? 🙂
The trick to a sunken room is to use a foundation, then remove the foundation from the area that you want to sink. You can add walls all around (even in the sunk bit) and don’t forget the stairs.
Have fun! 😉

I tried to do what you said, I couldn’t get it right, is there a video on it or instructions that are good.l tried MikesInside house and couldn’t get anywhere with it.
It just confused me more. Please help. Sorry I should have put this in the Forum. SorryNovember 18, 2014 at 5:13 am #5164CatherineTCJDParticipantRe: Sunk In Living Room?
It’s OK Chi (I might not have seen it in the forum…)
I don’t have a tute link but, here is a step-by-step that might help 😉Go ahead and build your house as you want it (on a foundation – any foundation works, but I think the brick one suits this style of house the best) …just put in a regular living room wherever you want it to be – on the ground/1st floor. Don’t add furniture yet, though. Be sure, within the living room space, you have an area designated for the stairs.
OK? OK. Now to sink the living room: just take the sledgehammer or use the foundation tool + “Ctrl” to remove the foundation from the living room area. You should have a big whole with grass terrain showing now in the middle of your house. This is your new sunken living room. Put whatever floor you want on top of that grass, and wallpaper over the ‘brick’ foundation so it matches the other walls in your house. Add a set of the modular stairs so your sims can get down there – add your furniture… and voila! A sunken living room.
A note about lights – because the game thinks this is a whole ‘nother ‘level’ of your house, any lighting that you put above the sunk area will not light up the sunk area. Even if you put a floor lamp down in the sunken area – the light effect will still be above the foundation. So, hide a few of the garden spotlights under your couch (down in the sunken area) or, if you have AL, shift a few of the wall lights down to the sunken foundation/walls.
I hope this helps (I tend to ramble… and not always make sense LOL!) And, here are a few examples that I’ve made:
Sunken Dining room at the front of the house
Huge sunken courtyard in the middle of the house PLUS a sunken ‘conversation pit’ in the back left corner
Sunken living room on the diagonal – center of the house
Sunken living room with a fireplace on front right side of the housePlease ask, if you’re still having problems – and have fun experimenting!
Hint: You could download a house just to take it apart and see how it was made 😉November 19, 2014 at 7:55 pm #5165chililiRe: Sunk In Living Room?
Thanks so much Cat, can I call you that Please? Going to try it tonight when I get upstairs. Thanks a lot.

Catherine, I agree with Anne. I really liked your sunken living room tutorial and found it very easy to understand and extremely helpful.
I am definitely going to try this next time I build a home for one of my Sims.
Thank you so much for sharing! Two thumbs up and DO publish it in Tutorials! :hurray:November 20, 2014 at 5:45 am #5168CatherineTCJDParticipantRe: Sunk In Living Room?
You guys are kidding me – right? I was just so happy that I knew something someone else didn’t, that I jumped in before anyone else could reply…
I’ve never written a tutorial before… is there really NOT a tutorial already out there for this?
I’m usually the last person to figure things out ~ and I usually just mess around until I’ve figured it out all by myself. 😮
But…, I could easily make a picture tutorial for Sunken Rooms – if you really think it would help someone else out.I’m glad ya’ll liked it 😉
…and Chi (yes, of course you can call me Cat! Please do!!!) I hope you are feeling MUCH better by now; and that you can figure out what I was trying to explain. :09:November 20, 2014 at 9:58 am #5169LadyAngelKeymasterRe: Sunk In Living Room?
Cat, please, please, please write a tutorial for this! I rarely attempt anything different like this because I always forget how to do them or don’t know in the first place! lol.

Oh, good! I’m so glad it worked, Chi:D
Yesterday, while I was in-game testing out a few other things – I took some pictures to make a tutorial for this. I probably won’t actually have things written up until tomorrow – but… a tutorial is in the making. :0016:

Oh Cat, please write that tutorial, my sunk-in-living room was great to create. I am putting the house called “Timberline Estate” on here tonight. There is not enough thanks to give you for helping me create the room.
And yes, I am doing much better, am now back in the swing, well, a little, I’m still have PT’s come to the house to help me get my strength back, but I sure learned how to climb those steps again to get up here to my game.LOL
I can’t wait for you to see my new house, sunk-in-living room and see thru roofs. Thanks again so much.
HugsSORRY—- Just saw your post, am so glad that you are going to do a tutorial, Could you please give me the name of the house you have at MTS with the sunk in living room, I lost it.
That’s me always loosing things, if it weren’t for my head attached to my neck I would forget that too.
Thanks -
